Adobe Inc. is an American multinational computer software company headquartered in San Jose, California. It was founded in December 1982 by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, who left Xerox PARC to develop the PostScript page description language. Adobe is best known for its creative and multimedia software products, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat Reader, as well as its digital marketing and document management platforms. The company's name derives from the Adobe Creek in Los Altos, California, which ran behind the founders' homes.

History

Adobe’s early success came from the licensing of PostScript to printer manufacturers, which became a standard in desktop publishing. In 1993, Adobe introduced PDF (Portable Document Format) along with its Acrobat software, enabling platform-independent document sharing. The company went public in 1986 and expanded through a series of acquisitions, including Aldus (PageMaker) in 1994, Macromedia (Flash, Dreamweaver) in 2005, and Omniture (digital marketing analytics) in 2009. In 2013, Adobe transitioned its flagship Creative Suite to a subscription-based model called Creative Cloud, which now offers over 20 integrated applications.
