Meta Platforms
Meta Platforms
Meta Platforms, Inc. (formerly Facebook, Inc.) is an American multinational technology conglomerate based in Menlo Park, California. The company owns and operates Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, among other products and services. It was founded in 2004 as a social networking site by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates. In 2021, the parent company rebranded from Facebook to Meta to reflect its focus on building the "metaverse," a shared virtual environment.
History
Facebook was launched in February 2004 as a Harvard University–exclusive social network. It expanded rapidly to other universities and eventually to the general public in 2006. The company went public in 2012 in one of the largest tech IPOs in history. Over the years, Facebook acquired Instagram (2012), WhatsApp (2014), and Oculus VR (2014), broadening its reach into photo sharing, messaging, and virtual reality.
In October 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced the rebranding to Meta Platforms, signaling a strategic pivot toward the metaverse. The company has since invested heavily in virtual and augmented reality hardware, including the Quest line of headsets, and created platforms like Horizon Worlds. Meta also faces ongoing scrutiny over privacy, data security, antitrust issues, and content moderation.
